Paycheck Budget System

Are you ready to STOP living paycheck-to-paycheck?

Just a few short years ago, my husband was the only income for our family. He made $11 an hour – $17,000 a year – working a very tough and physically demanding job. We struggled.

I had to make the decision more than once to either live off of beans and rice or pay the electric bill.

Our thermostat was kept at 60 degrees all winter just to keep our bills low.

We ate beans and rice because we had nothing else to eat in the house.

I played “debit card roulette” – where I’d go to pay for something and never know if I was going to get my card declined or not.

We bought new clothes as infrequently as possible. And when we did need to buy something, we could only afford to shop at the Goodwill.

I always found myself with too much month at the end of my money.

Too many bills that were stacking up in front of my empty bank account.

Scared to answer my phone, fearing that it might be a debt collector and that I wouldn’t have the money to pay them.

The stress, worry and fear all grew and grew.

Until one day when I hit my lowest low.

I was 6 months pregnant with my second child, shopping at the Goodwill with my 2 ½-year-old. I was looking for baby clothes for this new little one. Nothing fancy, just some onesies and footie PJs to keep him warm in the cold house. I went to go pay for the clothes which totaled $19.72.

I remember it so vividly – holding my son’s hand at the checkout counter, with the little one in my belly kicking. I was so pleased that I kept the total under $20 for 10 cute pieces.

And then the man came back – my card got declined.

I quietly begged him to try the card again – swearing that I knew there was money in the account, that it much have been a card error.

Declined again.

My face went white. I felt all of the warmth leave my body.

It took every muscle in my body to keep from sobbing right there.

Everything that I had in me went to stop the tears from pouring out of my eyes as the reality set in – I was pregnant, I was a mother, I was supposed to be a responsible adult… and I had no money.

Even in the Goodwill, I couldn’t buy anything.

I was too broke even for a thrift store.

I left the store with my son, buckled him into his car seat without a word, got into my seat, and sobbed.

I sat there in the back corner of the Goodwill parking lot and cried and cried. I cried for the embarrassment.

I cried for the shame.

I cried because I couldn’t handle my own money.

At that moment, that very scared and hurt moment, I knew that I needed to change.

I knew that I didn’t want to live like that forever. I didn’t want to have the fear and worry of never knowing if my money was going to last the month. It was then that I decided to take control of my money.

I taught myself how to budget, how to save money, how to control my finances instead of letting them control me. I ended our paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. And since then, we bought a house, 2 cars, and built a full, happy life on that small income of $17,000 a year.
